AT THE THRESHOLD OF LIFE FOUNDATION

ABOUT

Life has thresholds.

Some we choose.

Some we do not.

Some change us before we even understand what happened.

At the Threshold of Life Foundation, Incorporated is a non-clinical nonprofit centered on the human being at those crossings — particularly grief, caregiving, loss, remembrance, physical presence, physical absence and continuing connection.

We listen before we assume.

We seek to understand before we respond.

And when a need extends beyond our role, we help connect people with appropriate community and professional resources.

OUR PROMISE

Safety without a price.

Support without control.

Connection without fear.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The person is the priority.

The circumstance tells us where to look. The person tells us what matters most.

Grief is not a problem to solve.

It is a human reality to witness.

Love does not disappear when loss begins.

Every loss has its own shape.

People, never spectacle.

Stories are shared with dignity and permission.

What is unseen or unheard may still be speaking.

We honor mystery without pretending to resolve it.

OUR STORY

BEFORE THERE WAS A FOUNDATION, THERE WAS A LIFE CROSSING THRESHOLDS.

My mother became pregnant at eleven.

She gave birth to me at twelve.

I entered life inside a story already carrying more than most people could see.

My own life would later cross thresholds of motherhood, homelessness, survival, caregiving, family loss, identity and revelation.

Then, at fifty-five years old, I discovered who my father was.

Our time was short.

I stayed beside him through the final stretch of his life.

After he entered hospice, I left briefly.

While I was gone, he died.

I returned and held his still-warm hand until they came to take him away.

I took a photograph.

I thought I was preserving a moment.

I did not yet understand that photograph would open a door.

People saw the hands.

Then they began bringing me theirs.

That became BEHOLD.

My mother's story gave language to The Child Within the Child.

My father's hand gave me another question:

Do you know what’s in your hand?

And my life taught me this:

There is often more happening inside a human being than the circumstance allows us to see.

That is where ATTOL begins.
