Where this journey began
I knew I had a young mother. I did not yet understand what that meant.
Knowing my mother’s age was not the same as understanding that she was still a child. As I began looking more deeply into my beginning, I realized that my mother was not only a mother—she was a child whose own childhood had been interrupted. And I was the child born within that child.
That truth caused me to look differently at my identity, my childhood, my relationship with my mother, and the things I had carried without fully understanding their roots. I am living in that truth now—reconciling what happened, what it affected, what remained unspoken, and what healing can look like for both of us.
“It started with my life, but it is not only about me.”— Darlynn Faucet
The truth we must hold together
We must be able to see both children.
The child who became a mother
She may have carried pregnancy, responsibility, secrecy, fear, or circumstances no child should have been expected to carry. Seeing her childhood does not erase the harm. It allows us to understand the whole truth.
The child born within that child
That child may grow up carrying questions, consequences, relationships, and responsibilities shaped by circumstances they did not create. Their identity, voice, needs, and possibilities must also be recognized.
Harm can be real. Love can be real. Both can occupy the same story.
What this work stands for
Awareness without accusation. Compassion without condoning. Support without judgment.
The Child Within the Child does not condone children becoming mothers or romanticize the circumstances surrounding child pregnancy. It also refuses to condemn young mothers who were children themselves.
Our purpose is to bring hidden realities into the light and help young mothers, the children born to them, and families across generations access understanding, education, advocacy, practical support, trusted resources, and paths toward healing.
From one story to many
Our circumstances were personal. Our need to be seen is universal.
As Darlynn encountered other women who became mothers at her mother’s age—and other children born into similar circumstances—her private search for understanding became a public call for awareness.
The lens now opens wider to children and adults carrying interrupted childhoods shaped by abuse, neglect, parentification, caregiving, grief, instability, silence, or being forced to grow up too soon. It also preserves childhood joy, wonder, memory, creativity, and possibility.
